The Albanian Orthodox Diocese of America

After the establishment of a communist government in Albania after World War II and the destruction of the Albanian Orthodox Church in 1967, Albanian Orthodox in the United States found themselves without a mother church. The majority eventually formed the Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese in America, which in 1971 was received into the Orthodox Church in America.

Others, however, preferred to come under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and formed this small Albanian Orthodox Diocese of America. At present, its two parishes (one in Chicago and one in South Boston, Massachusetts) are headed by Bishop Ilia Katre of Philimelion (6455 Silver Dawn Lane, Las Vegas, Nevada 89118). He also served as Dean of the Orthodox Theological Academy in Albania from 2003 until 2004.
