Middle East Update: Help continue the healing

The Middle East. I can’t think of three other words — spoken together — that create such an overwhelming mental image of violence, devastation ... and fragile hope.

At Catholic Near East Welfare Association, we’ve witnessed the chaos first hand. We’ve seen Syria and Iraq explode — and the suffering in neighboring countries reach the breaking point — for Christians and non-Christians alike. And now, because of the brutality of ISIS, we’re seeing even more innocent lives become hell on earth.

Is there a bright spot in the darkness? Thank God there is.

Good people like you are offering donations and prayers. They’re helping CNEWA ease the suffering, fear and pain.

In northern Iraq, CNEWA is helping the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena care for over 100,000 displaced people. Families are receiving medical care and food. The traumatized are receiving psychological and spiritual support.

In Syria, we’re helping churches and other religious sisters provide food, clothes, blankets and other essentials. They’re assisting thousands of families, as well as the elderly, disabled and orphaned.

In Jordan, too, we’re ensuring that Catholic facilities — such as Mother of Mercy Clinic (also run by the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena) — can assist those who have nowhere else to turn. And in Lebanon, we’re helping caring places — like the Saint Charles Orphanage and School — give poor children room to safely grow.

But in all of these countries, the crisis isn’t over. The misery goes on. Young and old need housing to replace refugee tents. Safe places to worship. More schools run by caring sisters. More medical care to heal ravaged bodies and minds.

And it means they desperately need you.

Join us as we spread more kindness and hope. Please give what you can. Together, let’s help these innocent, struggling people start over again.

Thank you for giving and God bless you,

Msgr. John E. Kozar
